Homosassa Golf Cart Regulations
Golf Cart Rules & Regulations (Old Homosassa / Citrus County)
Effective Area: Golf carts are permitted only on County-designated roads and streets approved by Citrus County (per adopted resolution/boundary).
Follow posted signage: Designated routes are marked, and all applicable traffic laws apply.
1) Authorized Use
- Golf carts may be operated only on roads and streets designated for golf cart use by Citrus County Resolution, in accordance with Florida Statute 316.212.
- The County may modify designated roads over time.
2) Operating Hours
Standard hours (most common):
- Golf carts may be operated between official sunrise and official sunset.
Night operation (sunset to sunrise):
- Allowed only if the golf cart is equipped with:
- Headlights
- Brake lights
- Turn signals
- Windshield
- Night operation is allowed only by a driver with a valid, current driver’s license.
3) Driver Requirements
- Under 18: Must have a valid driver’s license or valid learner’s driver’s license.
- 18 and over: Must have either a valid driver’s license or a valid government-issued photo ID.
- No operation is permitted by anyone under 18 without a valid license/learner’s license, or by anyone 18+ without valid photo ID.
4) Insurance Requirements
- Owners must purchase and maintain liability insurance for personal injury and property damage related to golf cart operation.
- Minimum required insurance must meet the same minimums as Florida motor vehicles for personal use (per Florida Statutes).
- Proof of insurance must be carried at all times while operating a golf cart on County-designated roads.
5) Required Equipment
- Efficient brakes
- Reliable steering
- Safe tires
- Rearview mirror
- Red reflectorized warning devices front and rear
(Night operation requires additional equipment listed in Section 2.)
6) Passenger & Safety Rules
- Occupancy is limited to the number of seats on the golf cart.
- No standing passengers while the cart is in motion.
7) Sidewalk Prohibition
- Golf carts may not be operated on any sidewalk within Citrus County.
8) Violations & Enforcement
- Violations may be enforced as a non-criminal infraction (per Florida Statute 316.212(9)).
- Traffic-related violations fall under Florida traffic statutes (Ch. 316 and 318), as applicable.
- Other Citrus County motor vehicle-related ordinances may also apply.
9) Signage
- Citrus County posts signs on designated roads to advise motorists of possible golf cart traffic and that golf cart operation is subject to ordinance requirements.

- Drivers must be licensed and insured to operate a golf cart.
- Our golf carts are insured.
- Carts are street-ready and must be operated only on designated roads and in compliance with the rules above.
